Words Have Wings

Words Have Wings reflects the lost innocence rooted in my culture of silence and misrepresentation. It forms part of my artistic journey to explore my identity as a Bangladeshi immigrant living between two diametrically opposed cultures. Exposure to new forms of free expression has become the foundation of my creative practice. The 1952 Language Movement awakened our national consciousness, showing us that religion alone could not define our identity. This spirit of self-determination carried us through the 1971 Liberation War. However, we suffered a devastating blow when the Pakistani forces systematically killed our intellectuals, aiming to cripple the nation’s future. We have never fully recovered from that loss. Today, despite our history of fighting for language and freedom, freedom of expression is once again under threat. Cynicism and repression have fractured our society, creating an ironic reversal of the values we once fought for. As an artist, my language and calligraphy lie at the heart of my identity. Words Have Wings serves as both a reminder and a manifesto — calling for the revival of critical thinking, dissent, and individual voice in an increasingly anaesthetised culture.
